A DAY WITHOUT LOVE DROP NEW EP 'TOUR IS NOT A ROAD TRIP'

Philadelphia artist, A Day Without Love, just recently finished a tour to promote the new EP Tour is Not a Road Trip, which discusses caffeine keeping you alive on the road, and the DIY attitude that musicians question about selling music to major labels or keeping their DIY community intact.

Brian Walker, singer of ADWL, believes that this EP is merely a teaser of the themes explored in the full length, which drops on October 13th, 2023 via Ur Mom Records.

The EP opens with the track “DIY or Die” which starts with a super catchy beat and the repeating line/ chorus, “I sing in houses you sing for corporate,” which is a reference to house shows and the DIY attitude, and corporate being record labels or just more professional situations. This is the perfect song to start the EP because it sets the mood immediately.

Track two of the EP is entitled “Caffeine”, which speaks to coffee, tea, and other sources of caffeine keeping you alive and awake on the road, especially on long drives. The refrain of, “car needs gasoline and I need caffeine,” is, first of all, super catchy, but is also the through line of this whole album because it defines being on the road and needing the coffee to continue.

The band describes the next song to be about the friends on the road in different cities, people you sit down to dinner with, and the community made as a DIY artist, which even from the title, is apparent. The track is titled “Show Friends”. I think the idea of making friends not only as a touring band but as a scene, is important. Of the songs on the EP, this is my favorite because I have made so many friends through the scene and shows that I love dearly.

The final track on the EP is entitled “Home on the Highway”, which is about, “work-life balance of every musician and questioning if their life is sustainable enough to be a musician.” The song starts slow and sort of sad but then at about the 1:17 mark totally switches the beat into a more seemingly upbeat song, despite lyrics like, “should I travel or should I stay?” and that internal monologue about touring comes through.

This EP really gives you a look into the life of a DIY band and the daily thoughts that go into being on the road and away from home while figuring out if the life is worth it. Keep track of A Day Without Love here.
