CURRENT JOYS AT VIBES EVENT CENTER IN SAN ANTONIO

Only a few days into their 2022 winter tour, Current Joys made their way to San Antonio, Texas for an early-evening indie rock show.

Brooklyn-based Dark Tea kicked things off. I had never heard their music before, but they quickly proved to be the perfect opener for Current Joys. The catchy tunes instantly resonated with the crowd in the room. Although it seemed as if they were new to most of the crowd, they kept everyone engaged with quirky banter in between each song. The music itself was fantastic. Each member on stage showcased their talent. From the impressive guitar solos, to the harmonies, to the synths and the solid drumming, the band sounded tight and together, despite the fact the tour is still just getting started. Fans were even treated to a nice surprise as Nick Rattigan, frontman of Current Joys, joined them on cowbell for a song. By the time the set was over, the room was packed with fans eagerly awaiting Current Joys to take the stage.

After a short intermission, Current Joys were greeted by loud cheers as soon as they hit the stage. Despite playing to a large crowd, the show quickly felt very intimate, as the band took a minute to get set up and interacted with the crowd before even playing a note. The band started off with “Amateur” and the crowd was instantly mesmerized. The rest of the set was perfectly crafted, with highs, lows, new songs and old. The crowd went particularly wild when they played fan favorite “New Flesh”.

From start to finish, the band delivered an epic, high-energy performance. The fans belted out every lyric to every song, making sure to let the band know they loved them every time the music paused.

Before the show, I was a little surprised to hear Current Joys was playing at a venue of this size. I was naive to the fact that they are quickly growing in popularity and the crowd in San Antonio proved it. The tour is still just getting underway, so do yourself a favor and check them out when they make their way to a city near you.
